THE Qingdao leg of the World Extreme Sailing Series, one of four international sailing events held by the International Sailing Federation, is scheduled to be held between April 17 and 20 at the city’s Fushan Bay.
Nine well-known sailing teams from around the world will compete in Qingdao. It’s the second time for the city to host the international sailing event. Participating sailors include world and Olympic champions.
China will send a team named “America’s Cup” to compete in the event.
Qingdao is the second leg of the event. Two sailing teams representing Oman won first prize in the first leg at Muscat, Oman’s capital.
The extreme sailing competition allows a 40-foot yacht with five crew members, including four professional sailors. The final member can be a sailing enthusiast and is known as the “fifth man.” In the competition, the fifth man works with the professionals.
Local residents can apply to be one of the 48 “fifth men” during the Qingdao leg.(Li Hao, Sun Fei)
