As the Clipper Race approaches its tenth edition, now seems like a good time to look back at the previous adventures experienced by over 3,000 people.

Since the inaugural event, the race’s increase in size is almost immeasurable. The first Clipper Race crew left Plymouth in October 1996 on board eight 60-foot yachts while the latest group of adventure seekers departed London on twelve 70-foot ocean racers.

55 ports have played host to the Clipper Race during the race’s 18-year history - with the tenth edition setting sail in summer 2015

Clipper 1996 Race 克利伯1996年帆船赛
Winner: Arial 冠军:Arial号
The very first Clipper Race started on Wednesday 16 October 1996, with the eight-strong fleet of 60-foot yachts departing Plymouth, UK for the American port of Fort Lauderdale via Madeira. The inaugural race’s route took in ports including the Galapagos, Hawaii, Yokohoama, Salvador and the Azores before returning to Plymouth on 14 September 1997.

“We were in a vast, open expanse of utter wonder,” explains Elizabeth Banks, a crew member on board Arial.

“Phosphorescence that looked like fireworks, stars of breath taking brilliance, shades of turquoise and aquamarine in the wash of the waves. There were moments of terror - particularly coming up on night watch, cold and wet and lonely, the boat at 45 degrees, waves washing over the cockpit.
“磷光如同烟火,繁星闪烁,海浪来袭时蓝宝石般的晶莹剔透真是美极了。也有令人生畏的时刻-特别是在值夜班的时候,寒冷、湿漉和孤独,帆船倾斜有45度角,驾驶台时刻被海浪冲刷着。
“The tiredness was overwhelming. We rarely slept properly: we would all get up for sail changes, or to pack spinnakers. We slept to weather, so every tack meant moving the sails to the opposite side and sleeping on the opposite bunk.

“The days passed. We saw a light at night - another boat in the distance - and eventually, after thousands of miles, we sailed in to Yokohama, having won the sector from Honolulu.

“Port meant showers, warmth, dry clothes and getting drunk on the first sip of beer. Then some of the crew went skiing, others went exploring. There was the joy of seeing flowers again, of walking in parks. And of the telephone. “Almost too soon, it was over and we were off again from Yokohama to Shanghai - a race that proved to be one of the hardest since the boats had left England. Ras was in his element - it was all hands on deck almost the entire time. “It was very cold, very wet and very exciting. We ripped a spinnaker and spent 24 hours non-stop sewing it together again in sweatshop conditions on the floor of the cabin. Sleeping bags were wet; my hair felt like bird's- nest soup. We hit 40-knot winds and extremely high seas. I was thrown across the cabin and bashed my head and fainted into a spinnaker we were packing. It was all part and parcel of a high-energy race.”
“停靠港就意味着可以洗澡、暖身、晾干衣服还有就是一醉方休。接下来,有的船员去滑雪了,另外一些去当地游玩了。再一次感受到了在公园里散步时看见鲜花的愉悦之感。还有就是终于能打电话了。”“但是这一切过的太快了,短暂停留后我们又从横滨出发驶向上海-这段比赛是继从英国出发以来最为艰难的一段赛程。Ras感受颇深,差不多整个时间里,所有的船员都在甲板上奋战着。”“非常冷,非常湿,但是非常兴奋。我们用坏了一张球帆,而且不间断的用了24个小时在船舱的地板上血汗工厂里打工一般的劲儿又给缝补好了。睡袋也湿了;我的头发感觉像是燕窝。我们遇到了速度达40节的大风,还有当相当高的海浪。我直接被大浪打了个翻滚,撞到脑袋了,直接晕倒在了当时正在叠的三角帆里。这确实是高强度、快节奏的航海比赛啊。”
Clipper 1998 Race 克利伯1998年帆船赛
Winner: Arial 冠军:Arial号
The second edition of the Clipper Race started in October 1998 and it was a young skipper named Alex Thomson, who set about setting down race records, which currently still stand to this day.
第二届克利伯帆船赛是在1998年十月开始的,有一位年轻的名叫阿历克斯.汤姆生的船长创造了航海的记录,并且这个纪录继续由其保持,至今无人打破。
Still the youngest skipper to win the overall race, aged 25, Alex and his crew on board Arial also collected six consecutive race wins, a record which is yet to be equalled or beaten. 仍然是赢得整届比赛的年纪最轻的船长,当时的Alex是25岁,他连同Arial号上的船员还连续拿下了六段赛程的冠军,这一项纪录也是至今无人打破。
Also on board Arial during the 1998 race was Sir Keith Mills.

“I had been focusing on making money and had become a boring old fart so needed to broaden my horizons,” reveals Sir Keith while reminiscing on his participation.

“The Clipper Race training took me completely out of my comfort zone because suddenly I was no longer in charge, I was broaching in 40 knots of wind and unbelievably tired.

"It gave me a different perspective on life and made me understand myself quite a lot better. It made me change my lifestyle and some of the things I do.

“I ceased spending all my waking hours making money and spent more time doing more interesting things.

“My worst nightmare was being on mother watch and having to cook because I can’t cook. But I learned how to make bread and how to cook barracuda that we caught off the back of the boat so it wasn’t all bad.

“I can remember it all vividly, sitting up all night mending sails. There were ten of us on board and we all worked hard because we all wanted to win. Lovely, lovely memories.
“当时的场景还历历在目,我们一晚上坐着缝补帆布。当时我们船上有十个人,大家都很卖力,因为我们都想赢得比赛。真是美好的回忆啊。
“The boats were all the same so success came down to seamanship and a desire to win and despite that risky little episode, we were all inspired by Alex to push the boat pretty hard. It was a good happy boat which is probably why we won.”
“比赛的帆船都是一样的,所以说胜利是来自于航海精神和不屈不挠勇于争取胜利的欲望,我们都受到了阿历克斯的鼓舞,尽全力驾驶好帆船。那是一艘快乐而出色的帆船,我想这就是为什么我们获胜的缘故吧。”

Clipper 2000 Race 克利伯2000年帆船赛
Winner: Bristol 冠军:布里斯托号
The third edition of the race saw the UK daily newspaper, The Times sign up as title sponsor, renaming the race to: The Times Clipper 2000 Race.
第三届克利伯帆船赛的新闻出现在了英国的日报上。泰晤士报成了当届赛事的冠名赞助商,将赛事命名为:泰晤士克利伯2000届帆船赛。
Starting from Portsmouth the eight-strong fleet raced to Havana, Cuba via Vilamoura in the first stage, won by the Plymouth entry.
八艘大帆船从朴茨茅斯出发开始了第一段的比赛,经过维拉摩拉驶向古巴的哈瓦那,获胜船只是普利茅斯号。
“After 25 days at sea, the crew were absolutely jubilant to have won our first race in The Times Clipper 2000,” explained skipper, Matt Baker.
“经过海上25天的航行,船员们得知自己获得了泰晤士克利伯2000届帆船赛的首段胜利后异常的激动和开心,”船长马特.贝克尔如是说。
“We’d been pushing the boat hard and was rewarding to see our crew work had really come together to give us that race result.”

The final race from Jersey to Portsmouth was a short one, providing a grandstand finish for spectators and media alike. And what a finish they had with Jersey, Bristol and London all fighting for overall honours.

It was Bristol, skippered by Bob Beggs who ensured victory, becoming the first team to claim The Times Clipper Race Trophy.

Clipper 2002 Race 克利伯2002年帆船赛
Winner: Jersey 冠军:泽西号
Liverpool played host to the start of the Clipper Race for the first time during the 2002-03 edition, the fourth final race for the Clipper 60s fleet.
利物浦首次为2002-03届克利伯帆船赛承办了开赛仪式,这第四届克利伯帆船赛也是克利伯60尺帆船的落幕演出。
Race start day bought with it the worst storm Liverpool had experienced 100 days forced the Race Committee to postpone the start for 24 hours.
开赛日当天,正值利物浦百日不遇的强风暴,迫使赛事组委会不得不将开赛仪式推迟了24个小时。
“Race start stands out for so many reasons,” says David Cusworth, a crew member on board Liverpool.

“Saturday was a hive of activity preparing for the start, with over 100,000 people milling around Albert Dock.

“On Sunday the weather closed in and the decision was made to postpone the start. We eventually left in bright sunshine on Monday!”

The eight Clipper 60 yachts would retire after this edition of the race, making way for the second fleet of ocean racing yachts, the Clipper 68s.

“Being the final circumnavigation on the original Clipper Race fleet was very emotional, almost the end of an era. We knew a new fleet of boats were being commissioned but had no idea how they would look. So for us, the Clipper 60s are the original and best yachts.”

It was Simon Rowell who guided Jersey to overall victory beating Richard Butler’s Bristol team by just two points.

“There were so many highlights,” continues David.

Winning in to Cuba. Coming last into Japan. Both huge stand out moments in the race for different reasons and actually the sense of accomplishment of crossing the mighty Pacific, which did its best to beat us, even though we came last – is perhaps my strongest memory from the whole race.”

The Clipper 2005-06 Race was a race of firsts.
克利伯2005-06届环球帆船赛开启了新的篇章。
It was the introduction of the second fleet of Clipper Race yachts and the first circumnavigation of the series, which raced from east to west.
本届赛事正式引入了克利伯帆船赛第二代船队,同时也是新一代船队的环球首秀,从东半球驶向西半球。
2005-06 saw Guo Chuan become the first Chinese crew member to take part in the race on board Qingdao, during the Olympic Sailing City’s first entry in the Clipper Race.
2005-06届赛事中,郭川作为第一名参加克利伯帆船赛的中国船员正式参赛,与此同时,奥林匹克帆船之都青岛第一次冠名帆船参加克利伯帆船赛。
While Mark Preedy skippered the first ever entry from Down Under, WesternAustralia.com to victory, beating Durban to victory by nine and a half points.
马克.普瑞迪掌舵的澳大利亚首个冠名船只WesternAustralia.com号以九点五分的优势击败了德班号,取得了赛事总冠军。
“I am feeling pretty good!” revealed Mark, upon crossing the final finish line of the 2005-06 race.

“I wanted to win this last race to get the icing on the cake; it feels very satisfying to come into Liverpool first and makes our overall win sink in all the more!”

Clipper 2007-08 Race 克利伯2007-08年帆船赛
Winner: New York 冠军:纽约号
The Clipper 2007-08 Race once again started from Liverpool and saw the ten Clipper 68s complete the fleet’s second circumnavigation.
克利伯2007-08届帆船赛再一次从利物浦开赛,这是十艘克利伯68尺帆船第二次出征环球航海比赛了。
“In terms of the whole year it was an incredible experience,” explains Uniquely Singapore crew member, Graham McMillan.
“从这一整年来看,参加比赛确实是令人惊奇的经历,”新加坡号船员格拉汉姆.麦克米兰这样说到。
“It was tough and life changing in that I met people I will be friends with for the rest of my life and it changed me in terms of the way I interact with people and approach life.”

It was the New York team, skippered by Duggie Gillespie, who claimed the Clipper Race trophy. Securing ten podium finishes out of a possible 14.

The 2007-08 edition also visited the Chinese Sailing City of Qingdao ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, racing north from Singapore.

“Surviving the leg up to China was great achievement. I’ve never been so wet and cold in my life.
“I don’t know how we did it. We just had to take one watch at a time, but it was so hard and we were so glad to see the incredible welcome we got in China.
“能够坚持完成驶往中国的这个赛段是一个巨大的成功。我从来没有这么湿漉、这么寒冷过。我也不知道我们是怎样做到的。我们不得不轮流值班,实在是太艰难了,但是到了中国后,我们非常高兴,在这里接受到了非常热烈的欢迎。
“Lastly it was the reception we got in Liverpool, both at the start and the finish. The crowds were huge and it all felt a bit surreal that so many people were coming to share in our experience. I’ll never forget the people lining the banks of the Mersey and cheering us in. It still brings a smile to my face.”

Clipper 2009-10 Race 克利伯2009-10年帆船赛
Winner: Spirit of Australia 冠军:澳大利亚精神号
Hull, Yorkshire played host to the start of the Clipper 2009-10 Race and delivered an unforgettable departure ceremony for the crew members taking part.
约克郡的哈尔市承办了克利伯2009-10届帆船赛的开赛仪式,为每位参赛的船员呈现了令人难忘的出发仪式。
On board the homeport boat, Hull & Humber was round the world crew member, Della Parsons.
停靠港约克郡哈尔亨伯号上的船员戴拉.帕森斯是一名环球全赛段选手。
“We were tested time and time again during the whole race – a crash with another boat on the start line in Cape Town, rendering a hole to the water line and a ten-day delay for our Southern Ocean adventure.

“Later in the Pacific the whole fleet got a battering as the remnants of a hurricane north of Japan swept in our direction on our boat the result was a broken skipper – his leg, as he was swept down the deck by a freak wave. We had to stop racing once again, in order to get him safely transferred into the safe care of the Japanese coastguard. Another training exercise that we had never envisioned actually putting into practise.”

It was Spirit of Australia, skippered by Brendan Hall, which would claim overall victory. Making it second consecutive Clipper Race won by an Australian entry.

“So many things can and will happen when you put yourself in the hands of Mother Nature,” continues Della.

“The oceans and weather systems are a law unto themselves but can be traversed, experienced and yes enjoyed as long as you have a very healthy amount of respect for them, some excellent training and a great, well-bonded crew.
“海上状况和天气情况是很难有规律可循的,但是只要你对它们有足够的尊重和审视、参加过严格的训练、再加上一支精诚协作的团队,那么还是可以应对、感受甚至说是享受比赛的过程的。”
“It’s the teamwork, the respect for one another and trust we placed in each other that got us through the challenges of this unique and awesome race.”

Clipper 2011-12 Race 克利伯2011-12年帆船赛
Winner: Gold Coast Australia 冠军:澳大利亚黄金海岸号
The scene of the Clipper Race fleet leaving Southampton followed by the Royal Navy’s flagship HMS Illustrious marked a unique start to the 2011-12 race.
克利伯帆船赛船队缓缓驶离南安普顿,尾随的正是英国皇家海军的旗舰航母卓越号,这一幕为2011-12届克利伯帆船赛的开赛仪式添上极亮的一笔。
It would be the last time the Clipper 68 fleet would circumnavigate the globe, with the brand new Clipper 70s quietly waiting in the wings to take over.
这一届赛事将是克利伯68尺帆船的最后一次环球航海比赛,全新的克利伯70尺大帆船已经悄然待绪,准备拿过接力棒。
Gold Coast Australia, skippered by Richard Hewson, would continue the tread of Australian dominance by claiming overall victory with an impressive 12 victories out of a possible 15.
由理查德.修森掌舵的澳大利亚黄金海岸号以15段赛程中12段胜利的绝对优势再一次拿下了整届赛事的总冠军。
“The Clipper Race was a challenge, I’ve completed it and I’m really pleased and proud of myself for that,” revealed Welcome to Yorkshire crew member, George Allen, upon arriving back in Southampton at Race Finish.
“克利伯帆船赛的确是一次挑战,我已经完成了比赛,而且我因此感到高兴和自豪,”欢迎来到约克郡号的船员乔治.阿伦在南安普顿凯旋仪式上有感而发的说到。
“This experience has been absolutely fantastic,” Adds Jim Cole, one of 2011-12 race’s oldest crew member.

“I have loved every minute of this journey and other than a little broken finger 700 miles off the shore of Ireland it has been an incredible experience, especially for someone of 72 years of age!”

Meanwhile Edinburgh Inspiring Capital crew member, Justine Laymond, took part in the race after a double lung transplant.

“I’m just amazed to be home, it’s certainly been a challenge that I have overcome battling through my own personal challenges with my health, seasickness and exhaustion. I’m glad I’m home and I can actually flush a toilet or have to balance myself at an angle!
“完成比赛回到家中真是太棒了,我战胜了个人的健康恶魔,这当然是一次挑战,更重要的是我还克服了晕船和疲惫。非常高兴我能够回到家中,而且我还能倾斜着角度保持身体平衡,还能冲厕所!”
“There were a couple of moments on my journey where I thought it was game over but I was determined and powered myself through and it’s fantastic. I just can’t believe I’m home and I’ve done it! I’m so happy,”

Clipper 2013-14 Race 克利伯2013-14年帆船赛
Winner: Henri Lloyd 冠军:航海爵士号
The Clipper 2013-14 Race saw the debut of the brand new twelve-strong fleet of 70-foot yachts, which would see the overall crew participating in the ninth edition of the race to over 650.
克利伯2013-14届环球帆船赛引入了全新的由十二艘克利伯70尺大帆船组成的比赛船队,这是该赛事的第九届比赛,参赛人数超过了650人。
An unforgettable departure from London was laid on for the crew taking part with thousands lining the River Thames to wave off the fleet.

It was Henri Lloyd who would claim overall victory in the 2013-14 race, skippered by the race’s first ever Canadian skipper, Eric Holden.

“My crew is the most loyal, hardest working and I am going to miss them hugely. It has been a life-changing adventure for the crew and I,” explained Eric, soon after completing the circumnavigation.
