The search is on for intrepid crew to represent China’s Sailing City of Qingdao as Ambassadors in the upcoming edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The Clipper2019-20 Race, which will begin next summer, will see the world’s largest matched fleet of70-foot ocean racing yachts race40,000 nautical miles around the globe, visiting13 ports on its global route, including Qingdao.

Together with the Qingdao Organising Committee, the Clipper Race will select and train people from Qingdao to take part in the world’s biggest ocean adventure on board one of the team yachts, Qingdao.

Mr. Ji Gaoshang, General Director of Qingdao Sports Bureau and Executive Secretary of Qingdao Major International Sailing Events (Festivals) Organizing Committee, said:"My dear friends from the sailing world, the Qingdao Ambassador Crew selection for Clipper2019-20 Race is now officially underway. On behalf of the Qingdao Municipal Government and Qingdao Major International Sailing Events (Festivals) Organizing Committee, I invite you to apply to become one of Qingdao's Crew. Qingdao is known by the world as‘China’s Sailing City', and is the longest serving partner in Clipper Race history. The upcoming eighth consecutive Qingdao stopover will be regarded as'The Most Unique of All'.

China’s Sailing City of Qingdao is the longest serving Partner of the Clipper Race and will be a Team Partner and Host Port for a record eighth time in the2019-20 edition of the race. Over the past seven editions, almost a hundred men and women have taken on the ultimate ocean adventure to both learn more about sailing and also

Clipper Race Founder and Chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world, said:“I am very pleased that we will once again be working with the Qingdao Organising Committee to train people to represent China’s Sailing City in the Clipper2019-20 Race.

“Qingdao is a special city to us as it is was where our relationship with China began back in2005. Since then, we have trained almost100 people to represent Qingdao on the global stage, with some of the Ambassadors. since then has gone on to do many more great things in the world of sailing.

“I look forward to meeting the Clipper2019-20 Race Qingdao Ambassadors and seeing what they achieve on the race.”

The twelfth edition of the biennial ocean race, will be an important chapter in the growth of sailing in China. It will feature three Chinese Host Port and Team Partners and the largest number of Chinese crew in the22 year history of the event. Ambassador Crew will also be selected to represent the cities of Sanya and Zhuhai, with the latter making its debut as both a Team Partner and Host Port in the Clipper2019-20 Race.

The Clipper Race is the only event of its kind to be raced by non-professionals, with40 per cent of crew having never sailed before signing up. It is therefore not a requirement for the Qingdao Ambassadors to be able to sail, though a sense of adventure and desire to represent China’s Sailing City on the world stage is a must.

Applications will be open until Tuesday18 December, with selected applicants to be announced following a Selection Trial in January in Qingdao. The Clipper2019-20 Race will begin in the Summer of2019.
