A memorial was held in Qingdao on Sept 2 to pay tribute to former International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, who died on August 29 at the age of 79.

Participants at the memorial mourned Rogge's death deeply, praising his devotion to the Olympic movement, as well as his contributions to sports in China and Qingdao.

"Mr Jacques Rogge is a person easy to remember as he was a friendly and gentle official. He is hard to forget because of his great work and contributions to the Olympic Games," said Yang Xuerong, an official from Qingdao, Shandong province, while recalling the times she met with the former IOC president.

Yang, who is director of the press release division of the publicity department of the CPC Qingdao Committee, was involved in the reception work during Rogge's visit to Qingdao in October 2005.

The coastal city, which is dubbed as"China's sailing city", was the host city of the sailing events of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Rogge visited Qingdao three times and he praised the city's efforts hosting successful Olympic sailing events.

He once said that his heart was close to sailing cities like Qingdao, adding that the city had taken care of a great legacy of the Games and had given far more possibilities for young children to start sailing.

Zang Aimin, executive vice president of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing City Development Association, met Rogge several times when Rogge served as the eighth IOC president from 2001 to 2013 and she served as the executive vice-president of the Sailing Committee of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games from 2003 to 2008.

Zang said that she was impressed by Rogge's leadership skills and charm, adding that he was very nice and friendly, making sure to say hello to everyone around him.

"His mind was logical and his rational decisions made sure that everything went well in the preparation work of the Olympic sailing events in Qingdao," she recalled.

Che Jinghua, director of the Qingdao Municipal Bureau of Sports, said that sailing is a calling card in Qingdao and that its development has played a big role in the city's efforts to inherit the Olympic legacy.

The city will work harder to construct sailing infrastructure, spread sailing culture, and increase its sailing population to meet Rogge's hopes for the city, Chen added.
